The purpose of this Deed Project was to assist the orphanage Hogar Salem to renovate a new facility and relocate the home.  Hogar Salem is a girls’ home that currently provides a safe haven to 15 girls ranging from ages eight to 18.  These girls are either orphaned or have been abused or neglected.  Because of its limited income and assistance from an inactive Board of Directors, Hogar Salem’s facilities suffered tremendous dilapidation and was threatened with closure by the Department of Family Services.   Click on the following links to read more about our previous efforts and the Deed Project Proposal for this project.

Project I for Hogar Salem

Deed Project Proposal for this project

Although many unexpected challenges were encountered during this project, we were able to claim success thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ—first, then to the  over 1,200 man hours devoted by members of Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen and the financial contributions of the following entities:

·   Bedford Christian Church, Bedford, KY

·   First United Methodist Church, Coral Springs, FL

·   Tercera Iglesia Persbiteriana, Aguadilla, PR

·   Protestant & Catholic Chapels at Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, PR

·   And many other individuals

We invested over $13,000 to ensure the new house was suitable for an orphanage, obtained permits from the fire, health, and building occupancy authorities, and   were able to get the previously threatened license from the Department of Family Services renewed!  We also made a commitment to help pay 60% of the rent for one year.

Here are some of the things accomplished in the last six months:

·   Painted the house inside and outside

·   Cleaned, patched, and sealed the roof

·   Installed new light fixtures

·   Built two required rooms for storage

·   Installed shelving systems for large quantity food storage

·   Repaired outstanding electrical problems

·   Added required toilets, bathroom sinks, and mirrors

·   Installed closet systems

·   Repaired closet cabinets on two bedrooms

·   Installed three new doors and painted all others

·   Installed four ceiling fans with light fixtures

·   Installed several shelves for books, etc.

·   Built a computer station that can accommodate four terminals

·   Built a large kitchen table and purchased 16 matching stools

·   Installed a three-part kitchen sink, required by the health department

·   Procured and installed screen door to the kitchen

·   Conducted intensive yard maintenance

·   Purchased and installed a 1,200 gallon water supply system

·   Installed a required fire alarm detection system

·   Connected the upper and lower levels of the house via internal stairs

·   Purchased and installed railing systems on the stairs

·   Provided gardening tools and yard maintenance equipment

·   Purchased new furniture to replaced the old and worn out

·   Provided a new bed-in-a-bag set for every bed

·   And the list goes on!

On May 3rd the girls moved into the new house and it became their new home!  Thank you for helping make this dream a reality.  To wrap up this project we will fund the construction of a fence around the perimeter of the house and will help established a functional Board of Directors.   God Bless you!
