Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,
since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.
It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23-24

School Construction
Leogane, Haiti
Summer 2011

We all know the devastating effect the Island Nation of Haiti felt on January 12, 2010 after an earthquake hit the country.  Over 250,000 lives were lost and well over 300,000 people were injured.  Leogane is near the epicenter of the earthquake and absorbed a tremendous amount of damage.  An estimated 90 to 95% of the infrastructure and buildings were severely damaged.  Most of the already scarce basic services were lost.

One organization, the Dezman Fleury Foundation which supports orphanages for boys and girls in Leogane, Haiti, felt the devastating effects of the earthquake.  All of the buildings built and supported by the Foundation were lost or damaged.  These include orphanages, the clinic and pharmacy (which Deeds of Love helped build in 2005...click here for more information), the schools, the village for the needy, the guest house, and the bakery.  The only structure that stood the test of the earthquake was the first floor of the church (the second floor was a school and it was destroyed).  The video below provides a brief pictorial depiction of the devastation.

Our goal now is to help rebuild.  Other organizations have helped with the construction of new homes for the girls and boys, as well as constructing one of the two schools needed.  Our goal with this project is to rebuild the school nearest the town, where nearly 100 children from the orphanage and the community at large attend school.  Some work was initiated, but funds ran short and there is still much more to done to make it a school.

The total cost of this project will be approximately $30,000.  With these funds we will do the following:

- Install a roof
- Plaster the walls
- Install metal doors with locks
- Install screens for the windows
- Install floor tiles
- Divide the structure into eight classrooms
- Paint
- Install electricity
- Purchase blackboards
- Purchase chairs for teachers
- Build benches and desks for students

The labor will be completed by local workers who are in desperate need of work to make a living.  Our goal is to have the school completed before the beginning of the school year in September.

Below are the pictures of the existing structure and its current condition.  Please help us complete this school for the children pictured below...the children of Leogane.
